Living in Meknes

Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities, is renowned for its rich historical heritage and vibrant culture. Located in northern-central Morocco, it was founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids as a military settlement. Meknes flourished under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, who transformed it into a magnificent capital.

The city's distinctive blend of Islamic and European architecture is evident in its grand palaces, mosques, and fortified walls. Notable landmarks include the impressive Bab Mansour gate, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the sprawling Heri es-Souani granaries. Meknes is also a gateway to the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis and the pilgrimage site of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Today, Meknes balances its historical charm with modernity, offering visitors a glimpse into Morocco's storied past while embracing contemporary life.
